I recently attended iConference 2012 in Toronto. It was my first academic conference and a refreshing change from the industry conferences I have attended. At the iConference, no one was selling anything and it was a big information-sharing extravaganza. The presentations were plentiful and I was rather surprised to see so many presenters reading their papers as opposed to presenting on the topic. This made things a little drier than i was hoping for (I even had someone next to me napping during the keynote by Geoffrey Nunberg).

However, there was one presentation, titled Metadatapedia: A proposal for aggregating metadata on data archiving, that really stood out. The presenters, David Nichols and Michael Twidale, delivered a presentation unlike the others. One would begin presenting, then the other would interject with a rude, semi-crass, pointed question that would challenge what the presenter was delivering. When this first happened, I was not quite sure what to think. As the presentation progressed, so did this style. The result was a very memorable and powerful presentation.

This got me thinking about my own (questionable) presentation skills and what I could do ‘outside the box’ that would make a memorable presentation.

Steve Jobs was famous for his well-rehearsed presentations and ‘one more thing‘, Steve Ballmer is famous for, well-being Steve Ballmer (check out this clip at around 5:38-he has honed his passionate style for quite some time), and the iSchool’s own Dr. R. David Lankes kills it just about every time he gets in front of a crowd (he is here and here and and I believe the bio should read that he’s a full professor).

David and Michael clearly practiced and that is, along with subject-area competence, paramount. If you cannot find an audience to get in front of you may want to check out the local Toastmaster’s chapter, Orange Orators.

Getting into the more nuanced and psychological aspects of presenting is where I want to go with my own presentations and I will share a few books I am working on in that domain.

Presentation Zen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery by Garr Reynolds

Garr is the former Manager of Worldwide User Group Relations at Apple Computer, Inc. and Presentation Zen is his classic book that teaches us how to reach the audience through simplicity and storytelling.

Blah Blah Blah: What To Do When Words Don’t Work by Dan Roam

The author employs a system called Vivid Thinking helps to deliver a compelling presentation that does not sound like Blah Blah Blah to your audience.

Resonate: Present Visual Stories that Transform Audiences by Nancy Duarte

From the author who created the slides in Al Gore‘s Oscar-winning An Inconvenient Truth, this book aims to help leave your audiences energized and ready to take action.

If you want to get deeper:

Voices That Matter – A series of books from Pearson Education’s Peachpit Press, Voices That Matter disseminate influential ideas and revolutionary techniques from leading-edge designers and is a powerful learning companion for designers of all levels. There is also a yearly Voices That Matter conference.

Design For How People Learn (Voices That Matter) by Julie Dirksen -

In Design For How People Learn, you’ll discover how to use the key principles behind learning, memory, and attention to create materials that enable your audience to both gain and retain the knowledge and skills you’re sharing. Using accessible visual metaphors and concrete methods and examples, Design For How People Learn will teach you how to leverage the fundamental concepts of instructional design both to improve your own learning and to engage your audience. (from the author’s site)

100 Things Every Designer Needs to Know About People (Voices That Matter) by Susan Weinschenk -

Susan Weinschenk has a Ph.D. in Psychology, and a 30-year career in applying psychology to the design of technology. She has written several books on user-centered design. Her 2008 book, Neuro Web Design: What makes them click?, published by New Riders, applies the research on neuroscience to the design of web sites. A popular speaker and presenter, her nickname is “The Brain Lady”. She is Chief of User Experience Strategy, Americas, at Human Factors International, and runs a popular blog: Whatmakesthemclick.net. (from the author’s site)

We did a study of interns in the eScience program and see how well their experiences matched up with the courses taken and professional expectations.

Telescope by salendron via flickr

If there is one thing we can all agree on, it is that customer service is pretty much dead.

It has devolved to the point where most of us would rather give up on trying to contact the company we are frustrated with instead of putting up with endless menu navigation via phone, listening (or viewing) canned answers that are of little help, or ‘solutions’ that oddly solve nothing.

Enter ecotools

ecotools, as you may imagine by the name, is a manufacturer of ecologically, green-minded bath and beauty products. They are a member of 1% for the Planet®, support such charities as the Conservation Fund, Jane Goodall Institute and Ocean Conservancy, and use innovative earth-friendly materials to craft their products.

Most of their products are cosmetic accessories but they also manufacture some bath tools. In the name of cleanliness, I purchased the EcoPouf® Cleansing Pad. It provided a great scrub in the tub but after only a couple of days, the mesh started to come undone. This obviously was not supposed to happen, so I sent a note to their customer support team through their website.

Mere days later, I received a small package from Paris Presents (the parent company of ecotools) with a sincere note apologizing for defective product along with a replacement and some extra bath tools.

Needless to say, I was happily surprised.

I have also purchased the Bamboo Bristle Bath Brush and have been very pleased with its performance.

From mathbabe, to industry titans JESS3, to the iSchool‘s own Jaime Snyder, these blogs are a constant source of information, inspiration and education for me. I keep them stored in Google Reader making it easy to stay up to date with what is going on in the greater data and information community.

As a companion to my recent 86 tools post, this list of resources will quickly bring you up to speed on what is happening in the data world and get you going on your data-knowledge quest.

These blogs and sites are just the tip of the iceberg and I think I have a pretty good balance of information, data and visualization blogs.

Are there any you think I am missing?

Enjoy!

Firefox, Chrome, and Safari are great browsers – if you want a slow, bloated, and crash-prone web browsing experience. I grew tired of having my browser control my Internet experience and did a little snooping around in search of something better. Two that I came across and am currently testing are K-Meleon and Arora.

K-Meleon and Arora are two extremely lightweight browsers that SCREAM.

I was shocked at how much faster they perform than my old standby, Firefox. Mind you I am not using any sort of scientific method whatsoever, but it’s pretty clear these newbies are the winners in my decidedly unscientific tests. K-Meleon is Windows-only and Arora has a version for every system imaginable. I know these are 2 of many so if you know another, pass it on!

K-Meleon (aka The Browser You Control)

(K-Meleon homepage HERE)

K-Meleon is an extremely fast, customizable, lightweight web browser based on theGecko layout engine developed by Mozilla which is also used by Firefox. K-Meleon isFree, Open Source software released under the GNU General Public License and is designed specifically for Microsoft Windows (Win32) operating systems.

Arora

(Arora homepage HERE)

Arora is a lightweight cross-platform web browser. It’s free (as in free speech and free beer). Arora runs on Linux, embedded Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, Windows, Haiku, and any other platforms supported by the Qt toolkit.

Arora

Arora uses the QtWebKit port of the fully standards-compliant WebKit layout engine. It features fast rendering, powerful JavaScript engine and supports Netscape plugins.

Apart from the must-have features such as bookmarks, history and tabbed browsing Arora boasts:

very fast startup

integration with desktop environments

smart location bar

session management

privacy mode

flexible search engine management

ClickToFlash plugin

download manager

WebInspector, a set of tools for web developers

30 translations

Arora began as a demo by Benjamin Meyer to help test the QtWebKit component, but since then it has grown into its own project outside of Qt.

Arora has a small, simple code base that is fun to hack on. Join the party in #arora on irc.freenode.org!

I have jobs! Especially if you are a librarian (I also have some for museum folk).

Despite all the doom and gloom surrounding libraries and their future, there are still a ton of jobs out there for public, academic and special libraries. I for one think there is a bit of a renaissance going on in libraryland and if you are a creative, dynamic LIS professional, you will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reinvent the librarian position and the institution itself.

The list I put together has mostly RSS feeds and a few job-site URLs. Some are geography specific, some are library specific, some general, and even one in French.

Good luck with your search and have at it!

If you haven’t checked out LinkedIn Labs, get on it! The site hosts a small set of projects and experimental features built by the employees of LinkedIn. They are billed as ‘low-maintenance’ experiments by the LinkedIn team, but they yield some very powerful help to the networker or job seeker. There are a number of really interesting tools that you can use such as:

Integrating LinkedIn directly into Google Chrome

Viewing your connections across the timeline of your career

Getting your personalized LinkedIn Today headlines read to you on your mobile phone

And many more…

I found Resume Builder, the Hackday Winner of March 2010 to be the most useful for me. You can “build, save & share beautifully formatted resumes based on your LinkedIn profile.” Providing you have a well defined LinkedIn profile, you will get some impressive results.

I was really interested in InMaps, which is classified as ‘LinkedIn Analytics‘ and enables you to “visualize your professional network, clustered in realtime based on their inter-relationships.” Unfortunately I was a very early adopter of LinkedIn and have been methodical about growing my connections and my network is now too large to be mapped. Cool idea though.

I have been working on this (mostly) annotated collection of tools and articles that I believe would be of help to both the data dabbler and professional. If you are a data scientist, data analyst or data dummy, chances are there is something in here for you.

I included a list of tools, such as programming languages and web-based utilities, data mining resources, some prominent organizations in the field, repositories where you can play with data, events you may want to attend and important articles you should take a look at.

The second segment (BONUS!) of the list includes a number of art and design resources the infographic designers might like including color palette generators and image searches. There are also some invisible web resources (if you’re looking for something data-related on Google and not finding it) and metadata resources so you can appropriately curate your data.

This is in no way a complete list so please contact me here with any suggestions!

Data

Tools

Google Refine – A power tool for working with messy data (formerly Freebase Gridworks)

Many projects at Google store data in Bigtable, including web indexing, Google Earth, and Google Finance. These applications place very different demands on Bigtable, both in terms of data size (from URLs to web pages to satellite imagery) and latency requirements (from backend bulk processing to real-time data serving). Despite these varied demands, Bigtable has successfully provided a flexible, high-performance solution for all of these Google products. In this paper we describe the simple data model provided by Bigtable, which gives clients dynamic control over data layout and format, and we describe the design and implementation of Bigtable.

Data Mining

Weka -nWeka is a collection of machine learning algorithms for data mining tasks. The algorithms can either be applied directly to a dataset or called from your own Java code. Weka contains tools for data pre-processing, classification, regression, clustering, association rules, and visualization. It is also well-suited for developing new machine learning schemes. Weka is open source software issued under the GNU General Public License.

PSPP- PSPP is a program for statistical analysis of sampled data. It is a Free replacement for the proprietary program SPSS, and appears very similar to it with a few exceptions. The most important of these exceptions are, that there are no “time bombs”; your copy of PSPP will not “expire” or deliberately stop working in the future. Neither are there any artificial limits on the number of cases or variables which you can use. There are no additional packages to purchase in order to get “advanced” functions; all functionality that PSPP currently supports is in the core package.PSPP can perform descriptive statistics, T-tests, linear regression and non-parametric tests. Its backend is designed to perform its analyses as fast as possible, regardless of the size of the input data. You can use PSPP with its graphical interface or the more traditional syntax commands.

R Project – R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. It is a GNU projectwhich is similar to the S language and environment which was developed at Bell Laboratories (formerly AT&T, now Lucent Technologies) by John Chambers and colleagues. R can be considered as a different implementation of S. There are some important differences, but much code written for S runs unaltered under R. R provides a wide variety of statistical (linear and nonlinear modelling, classical statistical tests, time-series analysis, classification, clustering, …) and graphical techniques, and is highly extensible. The S language is often the vehicle of choice for research in statistical methodology, and R provides an Open Source route to participation in that activity. One of R’s strengths is the ease with which well-designed publication-quality plots can be produced, including mathematical symbols and formulae where needed. Great care has been taken over the defaults for the minor design choices in graphics, but the user retains full control.R is available as Free Software under the terms of the Free Software Foundation‘s GNU General Public License in source code form. It compiles and runs on a wide variety of UNIX platforms and similar systems (including FreeBSD and Linux), Windows and MacOS.

The WWW Virtual Library (VL) is the oldest catalogue of the Web, started by Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of HTML and of the Web itself, in 1991 at CERN in Geneva. Unlike commercial catalogues, it is run by a loose confederation of volunteers, who compile pages of key links for particular areas in which they are expert; even though it isn’t the biggest index of the Web, the VL pages are widely recognised as being amongst the highest-quality guides to particular sections of the Web.

There are hundreds of thousands of databases that contain Deep Web content. CompletePlanet is the front door to these Deep Web databases on the Web and to the thousands of regular search engines — it is the first step in trying to find highly topical information. By tracing through CompletePlanet’s subject structure or searching Deep Web sites, you can go to various topic areas, such as energy or agriculture or food or medicine, and find rich content sites not accessible using conventional search engines. BrightPlanet initially developed the CompletePlanet compilation to identify and tap into many hundreds and thousands of search sources simultaneously to automatically deliver high-quality content to its corporate and enterprise customers. It then decided to make CompletePlanet available as a public service to the Internet search public.

Semantic Web – W3C In addition to the classic “Web of documents” W3C is helping to build a technology stack to support a “Web of data,” the sort of data you find in databases. The ultimate goal of the Web of data is to enable computers to do more useful work and to develop systems that can support trusted interactions over the network. The term “Semantic Web” refers to W3C’s vision of the Web of linked data. Semantic Web technologies enable people to create data stores on the Web, build vocabularies, and write rules for handling data. Linked data are empowered by technologies such as RDF, SPARQL, OWL, and SKOS.
